Because my life isn’t crazy enough, I decided to challenge myself. Nothing insane like climb a mountain or drink 12 beers in one sitting. The idea is to push myself to write 2000 words a day. But they have to either be for a story to submit to a science fiction/fantasy magazine OR towards a manuscript I want to finish and annoy publishers with by the end of this year.
The first thing I’ve been working on is a short story for magazine submissions (I hope). Have a gander at the first 300 words or so and let me know (honestly – be brutal if you want – I can take it) in the comments. I really would appreciate it so I know if I’m heading in the right direction or not. I’d also love to hear what you think of the characters, story, etc.
Working Title: Adventures of the Space Scouts – Ghost Hunting on the Moon
Alex gazed up at the softly glowing half-moon as he laid facing up on his comforter, spread out on the grass in his backyard. His best friend, Dan, laid head to head with him, dreamily smiling with his eyes closed. Crickets chirped from the nearby azaleas and the faint scent of jasmine floated in the cool, summer night’s breeze. In the distance, a cat meowed impatiently, demanding to be let in.
“Two more weeks,” whispered Alex, almost afraid if he spoke it out loud, it couldn’t be true.
“Yeah,” Dan whispered back, “and then we can do this looking up at Earth instead of the moon.”
“I can’t wait to camp out in the Sea of Nectar. I was kinda hoping for the Copernicus Crater, but after those kids disappeared last year, they probably won’t ever let Space Scouts camp out there again.”
“I heard one of them went nuts and killed everyone and then opened up the compression door and blew the dome.”
“I heard that, too. Dad said it was just a malfunction in the air recycling equipment that caused them to keel over from carbon dioxide poisoning,” Alex paused, thinking, then added, “I wonder if the dead kids are haunting the camping dome there.”
“That would be ubertastic to go find out,” Dan almost shouted as he rolled over on his stomach to face Alex.
“We’d get into so much trouble, but it would be fun to go check it out.”
“Its set then, the first chance we get, we’re heading off to the Crater to look for the dead kids’ ghosts!”
“Oh no! I’m still grounded from the last time you got me into trouble!” Alex argued, sitting up to confront Dan; crossing his legs into an Indian position.
“Wuss!” challenged Dan, “I bet you don’t wanna go cuz you’re just scared. Probably piss your suit at the first strange noise!”
